While Hungary was under German control, Wallenberg was in the United States. The (WRB) or War Refugee Board had noticed Sweden’s attempts to save Hungarian Jews and decided to send someone to lead a mission in Budapest. Numerous people were considered for this mission. Koloman Lauer suggested that his partner Raoul Wallenberg be asked to go on this mission, stating Wallenberg's familiarity with Hungary. In June of 1944, Wallenberg was approved by the “WRB” committee to travel to Budapest and begin a rescue mission to save the Jews. |
